New research shows how A Day Without a Woman will affect global economies

New research shows how A Day Without a Woman will affect global economiesNew research shows how A Day Without a Woman will affect global economiesLook around your office today. How many women are in it and how many of them are missing? On March 8, the organizers of the Womens March on Washington are holding A Day Without a Woman, a one-day demonstration to raise awareness of the economic injustice faced by women and people of nonbinary gender.Women are encouraged to take the day off from their jobs and take to the streets. If you cant participate in the strike, youre asked to refrain from shopping and to wear red - the color they say signifies love and sacrifice- in solidarity.Organizers said they were inspired by the success of the bodega and taxi strikes in New York City and the Day Without an Immigrant strike held last month. By showing how global economies need women to function, the organizers want to shine a light on the seen and unseen labor of women and gender-nonconforming p eople everywhere. Here are a fewfacts you can bring up today to show how women around the world are vital, significant economic force to be reckoned with- and why women at work still have far so far to go.Without women, almost half of the global workforce disappearsNew Pew Research Center analysis shows how a global day without women could crash economies. Using labor force statistics from 114 nations with data from 2010 to 2016, the Pew Research Center found that women are at least 40% of the workforce in more than 80 countries.Sub-Saharan African countries have the most working women- but their jobs can leave them more at riskZimbabwe, Malawi, the Gambia, Liberia and Tanzania all had the highest female participation tarif with at least 50% of their workers being women. But women in sub-Saharan African countries were also more likely to be doing informal employment like unpaid family work that leaves them more vulnerable.Without female educators, schools in the U.S. cannot functionS chool systems in North Carolina, Maryland and Virginia are being shut down today because large numbers of their female staffers are striking. In Prince Georges County alone - a suburb of Washington - around 700 teachers requested the day off. It makes sense why schools in particular are feeling the hit.A Time study found that 84% of preschool, kindergarten, elementary and middle school teachers were in the U.S. are women.Education is not the only industry where women overwhelmingly dominate. Health professions are a stronghold for women, with 91% of all registered nurses and 96.3% of all dental assistants, according to U.S. census data. And nearly two-thirds of minimum wage workers in America are women. The gender pay gap could close by 2044 for some women, but right now its alive and wellWhite women earnabout 79 centscompared to every dollar earned by men, while black women make 66 cents and Latinasearn only59 cents. But for some women, theres hope on the horizon. For young women i n developed markets, Accenture said in a report on Tuesday that they could achieve pay equity by 2044. For this to happen, young women would need to be savvy about their careers and focus on digital fluency and tech immersion, the report outlined. Until then, women will keep marching and protesting and negotiating for that better future.

Robotic Dance Instructors Hit the Floor

Robotic Dance Instructors Hit the Floor Robotic Dance Instructors Hit the Floor Robotic Dance Instructors Hit the FloorTwo partners dance and sway to the rhythm, one leading, the other learning and following. This sounds like a typical night on Dancing with the Stars, but what if one of the dancers happened to be a robot? Not only is this becoming a reality, but you might actually find that the non-human in this scenario is a better and more encouraging teacher than many humans.Diego Felipe Paez Granados began as part of a team at Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan, wanting to turn a robot into, if not a winning contestant on DWS, then at the very least a machine prepared to give adequate dance lessons to an amateur. Now a postdoc researcher at the university, Granados (and his robot) has made great strides. Before I was involved, they developed an initial model that was a female dancer that tried to predict the steps of the partner, Granados says of researchers at the university. Whi le I was on hauptplatine it was about the opposite Can the robot teach you and guide you?A schematic design of the dancing robot. Image System Robotics Laboratory, Tohoku UniversityThe mobile robot uses a tripod on top of a base with three multidimensional wheels attached. There are four degrees of freedom that are designed to emulate a male dancer. This is something of a simplification of the human body, but the result is an adequate emulation of a parties motion while dancing. The whole idea of the project is to have real-time control so we can know what the actuators output is, he says. We have sensors and laser-ranged finders to obtain the fifth position.More For You Read about more breakthroughs in robotics from ASME.orgThree actuators in the robots lower body of controls the mobile base, a linear one in the middle part controls the rise and fall of the dance, and three in the upper body reproduce the torso, arm, and shoulder motions. The shoulder is controlled through a four-b ar linkage.Admittedly not much of a dancer himself, Granados went to a nearby dance academy to understand dancing and the human interaction involved before building his robot. You gain a new appreciation for dancing, he says.So how does the interaction between human and robot begin?Initially the person goes to the robot with a high position of the arms and then the robot, with a screen for the face, explains the steps and motions that person should do and the names of the steps its going to teach, he says. The person tries freely without the robot, following the screen, then the person tries directly in contact with the robot. The robot initially uses speech to tell the person what they should do and, after several trials, the robot stops using speech. The robot then guides them through the dance and it has a scoring system to show how youre doing at your dancing.Sessions with the robot are typically 30 minutes to an hour. The biggest challenge in the project was not only understandi ng how a person moves while dancing, but also how to have the robot communicate what the person might be doing wrong and help correct it.Wed like to eventually have a condition avoidance system and navigation through a room. Im also working on putting a better adaptive system into the robot, he says. Right now, it takes five or six sessions to adapt to a person, but I want it faster. The robot so farhas been limited to teaching the waltz. While Granados saysit doesnt yet feel like a human to him, the robots been particularly good for assessing how advanced a person is with their dancing. He hopes this work can expand beyond dancing and branch out into other fields such as bioengineering where it could assist with the movement of exoskeletons. Its fun to hear about peoples reactions, he says. Dancing is meaningful to so many, and this is definitely a different way to learn.Eric Butterman is an independent writer.Im also working on putting a better adaptive system into the robot. Right now, it takes five or six sessions to adapt to a person but I want it faster.Prof. Diego Granados, Tohoku University

Vaults Best Firms to Work For Each of the law firms included onVaults 2020 Best Law Firms to Work Forhas upwards of 250 lawyers on its staff, but many have at least 500. Some even employ over 1,000 attorneys. OMelveny Myers LLPLatham Watkins LLPClifford Chance US LLPOrrick, Herrington Sutcliffe LLPFried, Frank, Harris, Shriver Jacobson LLPRopes Gray LLPPaul Hastings LLPJackson Walker LLPCleary Gottlieb Steen Hamilton LLPChoate Hall Stewart LLP Pros and Cons of Working for a Large Law Firm There are benefits and disadvantag es to working for a large firm. Large firms pay much higher salaries and bonuses. Associates get experience working on more diverse cases. Also, having a well-known employer on your resume can help you gain future employment and further your career. The disadvantages include having to work longer days and complete specialized tasks rather than having a variety of job duties. Large firms also typically have a more formal environment. Vaults Best Midsize Firms to Work For None of thefirms included in Vaults 2019 Best Midsize Firms to Work Foremploys more than 200 attorneys and most have fewer than 100. Lightfoot, Franklin White, LLCNelson Hardiman, LLPRobinson Bradshaw Hinson, P.A.Bookoff McAndrews PLLCSusman Godfrey LLPWilkinson Walsh EskovitzCades Schutte LLPNutter McClennen Fish LLPHueston Hennigan LLPWolf, Greenfield and Sacks, P.C. Pros and Cons of Working for a Midsize Law Firm A midsize law firm doesnt have the same name recognition as a large law firm and, therefore, m ay not be as eye-catching on a resume, however, it comes with some benefits. A smaller staff typically means associates have the opportunity to work on all aspects of cases. Additionally, there may not be as much required overtime, and the atmosphere will probably be less formal than in larger firms. The downside is that the practice areas are not as diverse, and salaries are lower. Choosing a Large or Small to Midsize Firm You will have to decide- either before beginning your job search or when assessing job offers- whether to work for a large law firm or a small one. While Vault classifies firms with over 200 lawyers as largeand those with 200 or fewer as small to midsize, Georgetown University Law School has a different definition. It says alarge firmhas more than 100 lawyers andmore than one office location. The termssmall and medium-midsize, according to the school, are relative, depending on its market or region within the United States. For example, the size of a small or medium firm in New York City or Washington, D.C. is different than one in Denver or Cleveland. Georgetown Law goes on to explain that a smaller firmtypically employs 20 or fewer lawyers. Some have diverse practiceareas, but others, called boutique firms, specialize in one area. Large firms usually serve corporations as opposed to individuals and have a wide range of practice areas. While they pay their associates more, large firms also require working more hours each day. Your decision goes beyond choosing between a large or midsize firm. Firms can be broken down into smaller categories, according to BCG Attorney Search, a legal recruiter. In an article titled Which Type of Law Firm Is Best for Your Career, author Harrison Barnes advises attorneys who are searching for jobs to decide if they want to work in main offices of large firms, branch offices of large firms, mid-sized firms, boutique firms, or newer fast-growing firms. Geography and Practice Area You will also need to co nsider where you wish to work. Job seekers who are willing to relocatehave more options than those who want to limit themselves to a particular region. Many lawyers also choose to specialize in a specific practice area such as antitrust law, elder law, copyright law, and biotechnology law. If you have a preference for location or practice area, you can search by these criteria onU.S. News and World ReportsBest Law Firms. Bottom Line Take the time to consider your career goals and those firms that can best meet them. For example, if you are looking for more diverse experience serving individuals, a mid- to small-size firm may be right for you. However, if you wish to work in a more formal atmosphere serving corporations, then a large firm may be the right fit. Research different firms to learn about growth opportunities, work culture, and salary and benefits. Comparing firms along with the type of experience you can gain will platzset you on a path that is best for you.

Can We Do More to Help New Grads Find Work

Can We Do More to Help New Grads Find Work The economy is improving, but recent college grads are still having a rough time in the real world. According to theEconomic Policy Institute, recent college graduates face an 8.5 percent unemployment rate and a 16.8 percent underemployment rate. We can partially blame the economy for this, but we can also chalk some of it up to the mistakes that young job seekers make. Some recent grads dont apply to enough jobs 44 percent of them only apply to five jobs at a time. Many grads also fail to take advantage of the Web only 26 percent of them try to find jobs through social media sites. (Stats viaForbes.)But regardless of where we lay the blame, we need a solution. My question is can we employers, recruiters, HR professionals, and all the other players inthe hiring apparatus do more to help new graduates find work? The Association of American Colleges Unive rsities (AACU) seems to think so and I agree. How Employers Fail Recent GradsIn the Spring of 2013, Debra Humphreys, vice president of the office of communications, policy, and public engagement at AACU, made a bold statementEmployers may need to alter their recruiting and hiring practices in order to discover talent wherever it can be found in colleges and universities. While AACU respects the opinions of the geschftlicher umgang and nonprofit leaders who have participated in our surveys, we do not presume that their recruiting and hiring practices are fully aligned with what is needed for the long-term success of either their employees or their businesses or organizations. As an example of employers poor hiring practices, Humphreys cites the ATS, calling it a destructive technologyand lamenting the wayit works against the effort to find the best educated and most talented graduates.Humphreys is not alone in condemning the use of ATSs these facile systems turn the complex process of recruiting intoa game of superficial buzzwords, and manyin the hiring industry agree with Humphreys. Liz Ryan of the Human Workplace drove the point home when she wroteApplicant tracking systems dont inquire about what you learned at a job, what you left in your wake, or what you view as your greatest accomplishment. Our selection mechanism is stuck in 1940, interested only in the tasks and duties and tools you used, as though those things out of context could have any significance to your next boss at all.Aside from ATSs that filter candidates based on insubstantial criteria, the hiring world has another problem the so-called skills gap. In the past, Ive argued that employers perpetuate the very skills gap they bemoanby fetishizing passive candidates and failing toinvest in training programs that would help entry-level employees and recent graduates learn necessary,job-specific skills. I stand by these assertions very little has changed since the March in which Imade that assessme nt.Building Partnerships between Educators and EmployersAgain I dont want to spend too much time playing the blame game. Regardless of who is at fault, the factstillremains recent grads face a bleak employment situation, and we need to change that for the good of our nationalstaat as a whole.Unfortunately, companies can be notoriously selfish, prone to dismiss any call to action that does not serve their bottom line. So lets put the problem of un- and underemployment for recent grads in business-friendly terms employers can either choose tosit back and wait for the skills gap to solve itself, or they can take an active role in solving it.To help improve the employment outlook for recent grads and solve the skills gap, in a way the AACU has started the LEAP Employer-Educator Compact. This initiative brings together college and university presidents and business and nonprofit leaders for the purpose of working together to provide more opportunities for internships and experiential le arning, which better prepare recent grads for the job market. This is how we solve both the skills gap and the employment crisis for young workers partnerships between educators and employers, where both parties take active roles in cultivating the future workforce. As Humphreys says,Forward-thinking business and nonprofit leaders know that their future successand the future success of our nationdepends on whether our colleges and universities graduate liberally educated professionals who are prepared to fuel innovation and effective problem solving in fast-paced global environments.Employers, recruiters, HR pros, and all the rest, I leave you with a questionwould you like to join the forward-thinkers, or would you rather voluntarily cling to the (bleak) past?

A third of Americans would consider living abroad in the future

A third of Americans would consider living abroad in the futureA third of Americans would consider living abroad in the futureHave you ever thought about walking down a picturesque winding dirt road somewhere in Italy every single day? Or considered settling down somewhere cheaper, but more exotic like Ubud? Turns out youre elend alone33% of Americans think about living outside the United States for a period of time sometime in the future even if some of them dont think it will actually happen. And 5% are making more serious plans to leave, according to new research on migration aspirations.Researchers from the University of Kent at Brussels and Tufts University in the United States used data from a 2014 survey of 877 U.S. born citizens living in America. The data found that people had various reasons to want to leave the top being exploration87% wanted to explore the world51% for retirement49% to escape a bad/disappointing situation Stateside48% for workWhatever their reason, howe ver, researchers found that there was one common factor uniting Americans who were thinking about the idea of leaving the country they didnt identify as having a very strong sense of national identity. When we looked at what underlying factors played a role in Americans thinking about migrating, we found that having a less than very strong American national identity was an important factor, said co-researcher Dr. Amanda Klekowski von Koppenfels in a release. Other considerations were knowing Americans who had lived abroad and having served in the military connections which might serve as networks once overseas.People didnt actually want to leave the country forever 49% said they would want to live abroad for less than a year, and 30% imagined sleeping on a hammock in Tahiti (or wherever) for between one and five years.
